Choosing the right pot is one of the easiest ways to keep succulents and cacti healthy. The goal is simple: roots should never sit in wet soil for long.
Drainage holes: yes, please
For succulents and cacti, we strongly recommend pots with drainage holes.
- Drainage helps prevent root rot.
- It also makes watering easier (water thoroughly, then let excess drain out).
If you’re using a pot without drainage:
- use it as a decorative cover pot and keep the plant in a nursery pot inside.
Terracotta vs plastic (quick comparison)
Terracotta (clay)
- Breathable: helps soil dry faster
- Great for people who tend to overwater
- Heavier (more stable for tall plants)
- Can dry out quickly in hot/sunny spots
Plastic
- Holds moisture longer
- Lightweight and inexpensive
- Better for very dry environments or forgetful waterers
- Higher rot risk if soil mix drains poorly
Pot size tips
- Choose a pot only 1–2 cm wider than the current root ball for most succulents.
- Oversized pots hold too much wet soil and can cause rot.
