Succulents and cacti do best in soil that dries quickly and allows air to reach the roots. Regular houseplant soil often holds too much moisture.
What we recommend (simple rule)
Use a succulent/cactus mix or a fast-draining blend that is:
- gritty and airy
- not dense or peat-heavy
- dries within a few days (depending on your climate)
Why it matters
Good soil helps prevent:
- root rot
- fungus gnats (they love consistently damp soil)
- “mysterious softness” caused by roots staying wet too long
A common DIY mix (optional)
If you mix your own, a common starting point is:
- 1 part cactus/succulent soil
- 1 part mineral grit (perlite, pumice, lava rock)
Adjust based on your environment:
- Humid / low light → more grit
- Very dry / hot → slightly more organic material
Repotting tip
After repotting, wait a short period before watering so roots can settle:
- many succulents do well waiting a few days before the first watering
